Serger shopping and being lazy...

What a lovely weekend we had here.  The weather is gorgeous for this time of year - normally we're boiling by now.  I'll take what I can get.  I got my car back out of the shop on Saturday too - after over 2 weeks of work on it.  It runs beautifully now - let's hope it lasts.  Funny thing is, we left our other vehicle at the shop to test drive the car, and when we got back, that one wouldn't start.  Truly.  At the mechanic, the truck broke.  I can't decide whether that's good luck or bad luck, but at least the mechanic was still in from earlier that day, and fixed up the truck quickly. But really.

We also went serger shopping.  It was a great experience to go in and talk with people about the machines.  And the salesperson at the shop I went to is also the repair person, so I felt like I was really getting an honest opinion of what a good machine is.  We talked at length about different machines, features, things that were important to me, and so on.  Being that the shop is 1 mile from my front door, I hope to be able to buy something from them soon.  I settled on a machine that I need to save a little for, but has all around great reviews, some features that just made it for me, and a threading system that I'm comfortable with.  I even got the go ahead from my financial advisor (Mr. Tupelo) to invest in the machine.  So hopefully soon I'll be back on board the serger train and getting things done.  It's amazing how I just can't do anything without one now.  I guess I'll never go back to using just a sewing machine.

What I really took away from the experience of my last (2) Lucy's, was this - Buy Locally.  Not just as a hipster/hippie sentiment - I have another reason.  Beyond supporting your local economy, there are some great benefits. When you buy from a shop local to you, generally you are offered free classes along with your purchase, to help you learn your machine.  Additionally, most shops are also service places for your machine, and offer their own warranties and service plans - if you have a problem just drive it to the shop, and you don't have to send it anywhere through the mail or take it to an unfamiliar repair shop.  This was all news to me - I have NEVER had a big enough problem with my cheap sewing machine that I had to take it in.  It never occurred to me to rank service as a big part of my purchase.  Something to be considered, I guess.

I'm looking forward to making my purchase - here's hoping he holds that price for me until I get my funds together.  :)

My old Lite Brite.  My youngest, C (2 years) is an expert.  He loves it.  Next up are the K'nex and Legos.  I even found some good old Lisa Frank stationary.  :)  Because every 7 year old mailed letters.
