Bias tape!

When you make a handmade project, a nice finishing touch to top it off it bias tape.  I use it especially for kid's robes, blankets, and similar projects.  But the selection of bias tapes you get in packages is abysmal.  There's not that many colors, I've never seen any patterns, and the fabric is just...well the texture never comes close to the fabrics I sew with.  So one day last year, I decided to make my own. And I haven't looked back since - this is what I did last night.

There's a wealth of tutorials out there for it, but I started with Dana's over at.Dana-Made-It.  I got the idea in my head, bought my little bias tape dohickey gadget, and when I felt courageous one evening, got started.

Bias Tape Dohickey Gadget

It takes some time to make it, but for your work you get 9 (NINE!) yards of bias tape for the yard of fabric you use (you use a yard to cut off a bias half yard).  But it is absolutely all the difference in the world to make something look more professional.  You can match your fabric, coordinate your fabric, or use something else entirely.

Here's the stripe fabric that coordinates with the fabric I'm using for the carseat cover.

Last night, since Lucy 2 had an untimely demise, I satisfied myself by making some bias tape.  Here's all 9 yards of it.

If you haven't made your own tape yet - try it!  Hop on over to Dana's tutorial (and check out her other projects), buy a tiny cheap bias tape making gadget, and off you go.

Have a great one!
