Happy Heart Day + Project!

Happy Love, Heart, Valentines, Saint Valentines....whatever you call it Day!

I woke up this morning ready to celebrate, but I had nothing to wear!  No hearts, no red, no pink, nothing!  So I did what any crazed woman would do before she took the kids to school...I made a heart headband!  It was super easy, came together quickly, and the technique could be used for any seasonal celebration.  If I had more than 10 minutes to devote to it, I would've done some cut outs or woven ribbon through slits in the hearts. Maybe next time!  So, moral of the story - if anyone needs a last minute V-day accessory, jump on this one, it's fast and cute.

I used glitter red felt, which I had on hand already.  We had also been gifted some V-day cookie cutters, some heart ones, a cupid and arrow, and a double heart.  I used the double heart to trace the shapes I used.  I used about 10 inches of felt, and traced the cookie cutter 3 times, alternating the way the hearts faced.  Then I cut it all out using scissors...if you need a sharper edge and have time, use a craft knife for better results.  This is the cookie cutter I traced.

For the stretchy part of the headband, I used about a foot long section of red fold over elastic (FOE).  If you haven't seen or used this stuff yet, it's cheap, comes in billions of colors, and can be used for so many things!  Some people just use the FOE itself for headbands, and sew the ends together.  I bought mine from a vendor on EBay, in an assortment of 20 or so colors, and it was fairly inexpensive. It's got a nice sheen to it, and you see that line down the center of it?  That's where you would fold it over if you were using it as a binding on things like underwear and bras.

Anyway, back to the headband.  I hand stitched the edges of the elastic about an inch from the end of each side of the felt piece, using embroidery thread You could use your machine, but it's only a couple of stitches, and plus, I wanted to use matching thread, and not have to wind my machine with red for one 2 second use.

There it is!  You're done.  Pat yourself on the back for being so darn creative (that's what I did...).  And enjoy the day!

Side note - has anyone pierced their mannequin's ears?  I was debating the idea but I don't want to melt her lobes off!
