KCWC - Flashback Tee!

Here's my first completed KCWC sewing project.  Don't know what KCWC is?  There's a link in my sidebar - basically, it's Kids Clothing Week Challenge, a challenge to sew one hour each day for your kids.

It took me a day to cut these and another day to put them together and hem them, but I'm done. Mass making is SO much better than one at a time, when you have a serger. When I have to switch stitches, I get a lot of use before I have to switch again.  Better time management. Plus, you really learn a pattern's ins and outs when you use four different fabrics!



I used Made By Rae's Flashback Tee pattern. I bought the pattern ages ago, but never got around to making shirts. I've had the fabric for awhile though - I must have bought that when I got the pattern, because this was all stuff in my stash. Is that good or bad?

I made them all in 5T - and they all fit perfectly!  I did the neck binding but nixed the wrist binding, since I'm always bothered by shirts with fitted wrists. I assume my oldest would be too.

Individually - The camouflage shirt is made from a "knit" RealTree I had picked up at JoAnn last year sometime. "Knit" because it really has no stretch, in any direction.  This is the tightest of the shirts because of it.  I bound the neck with brown jersey to coordinate, since it had some stretch.  This one already went out on A, "dove hunting" with daddy. What a big boy...he's growing too fast.

This one is my favorite - a super stretchy knit with horse/carrot print.  I bought this before A was born. Over 4 years now it's been in my stash!  At least I finally got to use it, and for the right person!  I bound the neck with green 2x1(maybe?) rib knit. I like the rib knit the best by far for binding. Rae, you were totally right - rib knit for binding. The rest is much harder to use and doesn't finish the project as nicely.

The one is made with some really stretchy printed knit, with camouflage skulls on it. I think the print is a bit overwhelming, but A really likes it.  I bound it with the same fabric, but it warps the print pretty badly, and the collar seems stretched out of shape already.  It's my least favorite of the bunch, but I still quite like it.  A wore it to school today, his choice. :) I like when I make things he WANTS to wear.

This last one is A's favorite - he picked it to wear the very next day!  He "helped" me make it.  I had some blue jersey knit on hand, and we got some fabric ink and some monster stamps out, and went to town.  He's a huge fan of the 3 googly eyed monster.  I bound it with the same fabric, and it turned out well.  One of the shoulder seams is a bit off for some reason, but if he doesn't care, I'm not picking the serged seam apart. 

What do you think?  I"m really excited to have so many nicely done, completed, wearable, new garments for my oldest.  I feel bad that he gets all the "new" clothes, but Mr. C has so many hand-me-downs, there's just not a lot of point in making things, until he gets old enough to ask.  Do you have that problem?

Have you used stamps and fabric ink before? It's a great way to make your own print and get your kids involved.  If not, would you like a quick tutorial? It's really easy.
