Recipes - Old, New, and just completely silly.

(please excuse any sideways photos - they just won't cooperate!)

So while we were here - Lake Livingston, Texas -

Relaxing ourselves...on the fabulous screened in porch...

Mr. Tupelo had a birthday celebration.  The past two years I have made this delicious concoction - Kalter Hund.

Mr. Tupelo doesn't like sweets so much, and never asks for them.  But he requests this cake now.  Mostly because it IS amazing.

I'm still trying to perfect the perfect layering technique.  In any case, the dessert is delicious, and totally kid and pregnant woman inappropriate - there's a raw egg and a good bit of alcohol.

Yes.  You heard that right.  You soak butter cookies in rum - I use locally made Pecan Rum - yum.  Then layer them with a chocolate/butter/sugar/egg mixture, refrigerate, and serve with whipped cream.

Absolutely a wonderful recipe, and one that I first found on AllRecipes, here. Ridiculously terrible for you. And I totally recommend it.

But on the subject of recipes, my mom passed down the habit of looking through old and found cookbooks, and for whatever reason, I can't help but look at cookbooks when I find them.

The lake house had this little gem. The 1989-1990 Pasadena Council PTA Cookbook.

In it I found a couple of yummy sounding non-traditional (to me) recipes, and look forward to making them.  Like these Cheese Wafers.  I can see my little ones devouring these.

And this recipe for Avocado Hot Sauce - which sounds very similar to a green salsa a Mexican restaurant chain around here used to serve - if you are from Texas, does Casa Ole still serve it?  Last I was there, the sauce had changed or something. I will definitely be making this - maybe for football season.

And then there were a couple of fabulous tongue-in-cheek "recipes" I couldn't help but laugh at.

Such as - How to Boil Water (do you see it's the principal who wrote these??)

And my favorite - Water Buffalo Stew.  Read through to the last line. Awesome.

Do you ever pick up cookbooks and other's recipes just to have a gander?  It was a great way to pass a cool morning while someone else slept in.

  1. Looks yummy (the cake and the location)! And, btw, I'm loving the look of the blog :)
