My oldest has a friend at school that is the dearest little girl, and I decided we should make her a skirt. Lo and behold, her birthday party is also eminent, so we decided it would make the perfect gift for her.
I tweaked my ballet skirt pattern a bit, lengthening the skirt and the overlapping layer, for modesty. Last thing I want is to give someone a skirt that is too short on their little girl! I still gave it a lettuce edge though - it's too cute to resist!
So here it is - the Ruffled Party Skirt. The only thing I managed to sew this week for KCWC!
There's something so satisfying about taking photos of things in trees...it's so...organic, I guess. Unpretentious.
I used a stretchy navy knit with pink pebbles on it for the underskirt, and did the lettuce edge in a darker pink - from my Pick Your Plum thread set. I found this pink lacy knit in the red dot section not too long ago, and it matched the underskirt perfectly. I ran the lettuce edge in the same color thread.
The overlay layer is a little longer than half the underskirt. I used 2" wide elastic for the waistband (which I acquired for 25 cents a yard a while back), and a small piece of ribbon to hide the seam and mark the back of the skirt. I loved using the contrasting thread on the elastic - I did forget that elastic can slip when you sew it though, and my lines are a little bit less than perfect. Oh well. It's the thought that counts.
I'm so excited to gift this on Saturday - I think she's really going to like it. It's all swishy and girly, and everything I'd want in a skirt. I totally would wear it. Bit short on me though!
I've got another project to get done today, just wait until you see the icky before pictures!
Thanks for coming by!
This is absolutely adorable! I love the fabrics--the print and texture work so well :) Great job! I'm sure she will love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea using the ribbon to hide the seam. Cute skirt!
