Yarn therapy!

Mr. Tupelo has been working long hours, and with the start of school and swim lessons, my responsibilities are back ten fold from last year. It's nuts!  With all that's going on and lots of extra walking, my hip has started acting up again.  So when I'm home, I'm resting it as much as possible, which means lots of laying around watching TV and yarning.  I would say crocheting or knitting, but it's been a little bit of everything. I'm thankful for the hobbies I've picked up the past year, because really, without them, rest time would be really dull.

I spent most of the weekend trying to learn how to knit socks.  I'm not a knitter, but I really want to make pretty socks!  Sock yarns are so pretty and have such nice texture, and the finished products are so lovely! I fought with "knitting" all weekend, and finally had to give up. I just wanted socks. So I found an article in my Interweave Crochet magazine from Winter 2011 that had a whole write up on crocheting socks, and gave it a shot.

Welcome to the first socks I've ever made!

I made them in the large size, since they are for someone with slightly bigger feet than mine, and they are a bit loose on me - I wear about an 8.5 in US shoes - if they were for me, medium would have worked better.

I finished one and was excited that I had accomplished something! But then I remembered I had to make another one, exactly the same, and hopefully have it look the same. It's close!  I'm just used to doing one-off projects, and not having to replicate them, you know?

I'm happy to have finished a pair of socks!

Now that I can crochet them, I really want to knit some, seeing how different they look. I like the crochet ones, but they don't have the same look to them. Anyone have any tips/tricks/sites they can send my way to help me out?  I've knitted once or twice before, but I really struggle with it!

Hope things are going smoothly for you this week!  I have a couple of other yarn projects to show you soon, plus some beautiful projects I've been mailed from friends.  I love friends!

  1. I love them--the colorway is awesome! I know your pain with socks--they are definitely hard. However, my Boston Bestie Danielle has taught sock classes and is very good at explaining, so she may be able to help you out. Go ahead and send her a message at her FB page https://www.facebook.com/dmacknits and she'll guide you to the best and easiest way. Have fun! I can't crochet at all--I tried once and just didn't get it...

    1. Thanks! I'll have to go hunt her down. I talked to a friend of mine who just knitted some socks for me, and got some good tips and supply recommendations, so hopefully I can try again soon. The sock yarn, in case you were wondering, is Patons Stretch Socks in Plum - I found 2 skeins clearanced at half off, so I thought I'd give it a try. Interesting to work with, at least. :)
