I bought plants. Lots of plants.
The boys and I make a habit of visit our hardware store's plant section. They have a great selection of plants in the clearance area, and most are still very healthy and in season. We recently went and pick up all this stuff for $35 bucks.
Lots and lots of plants, and a bag of dirt. But the dirt isn't for my plants, strangely.
I got all the non-fern (ferns went to hanging locations) plants together and pulled out a big metal tub we used to grow pumpkins last year. Unfortunately, our pumpkins (and all squash family things) had a terrible case of powdery mildew and couldn't be saved, so the bucket just needed some weeds pulled. I went to work arranging and planting my plants. And while I worked, so did the boys, with the bag of dirt they bought.
It was all their idea, to buy some dirt for their construction vehicles. So I opened the bag, gave them shovels, and the worked to fill the water table while I planted. (Can you see Maurice the giant metal chicken back there? Best Christmas present ever).
They were happy driving, I was happy planting.
Who made the bigger mess? Me, by a long shot. But we were all happy.
See you soon!
Thanks for the tip about the clearance section, I have a yard for the first time in my adult life now and I want to spruce it up - yeah!
