Project Run and Play Open Audition Entry - the New Newsie

Well, I finally finished one of the outfits. I wasn't sure how the girl one was going to turn out on my model, and I changed my mind on the fabric last minute...so I'm going to have to save that one for another day.

I'm actually surprised how the boy's outfit turned out.  I was the most worried about it, since it can be difficult to get character and style into boys' clothing sometimes.  I think I worried about that so much I out-designed myself, and really made this one stand out more than the dress ever would have.

I had originally planned a more steampunk type look, but when I went with my gut in picking supplies, the look was better than I had imagined.

So, without further ado, here it is.  I call it the New Newsie.

The hat - thrifted
The tie - found in the closet before we left for our shoot
The shirt - Walmart, ages ago
The star hoodie - Target
The vest - made and designed by me
The pants - made by me using the Growing Up Sew Liberated Pocket Pants pattern, in 4T

The Vest -
I used a wider wale corduroy for the exterior, in a chocolate brown.
For the interior, I used a Sari fabric, in a shiny and satiny black.  It's embellished with a geometric type circle print.

I used black piping around the outside edges, except for the arms, since I felt that might be uncomfortable for him

I drafted the pattern from a button down shirt in his closet, one that was a bit big on him.  I used similar lines, adding in for the seam allowances, and cutting the arm holes a bit deeper.  I freehanded the V neck. I took about 2 inches off the inside buttoning seams, since I wanted a gap for the the fasteners to show off.
For the fasteners, on one side I used denim buttons, and on the other, I thought outside the box a bit.  I used clip-on curtain rings in the smallest size I could find, and clipped one side to the vest and looped the rings around the denim buttons to fasten it.  I love how industrial it looks.
I sewed the whole things using a coordinating chocolate brown thread.I added a pocket to each front side, which was a natural place for a pocket watch.  Which by the way if you ever need one, Walmart carries 2 different styles, in the traditional vein.  Plus pocket watches are the perfect distracting prop for little boys.

The Pants -
I used the pattern for Basic Pocket Pants from Growing Up Sew Liberated.  Love the pattern, though I kept having problems with the length of the waistband.  I'm sure it's me though.
I used the same corduroy for the pants as I did the vest.

For the contrasting fabric (cuffs, binding, and waistband), I used a black suiting with a sheen to it, since I wanted something more durable than the Sari fabric. I was having trouble with that shredding so much, I wanted to try something new.  They match really well.

I used the same chocolate brown thread as before.

I added a denim button right under the waistband on the front center, so it would match the vest more.
the "whazzzuuppp?!" pose

I love the way it looks on Mr. A, and he looks and seems so comfortable in it.  I'm really happy with how both components turned out, and I'll definitely be using that pants pattern again.  I hope everyone else loves it as much as I do!

I call this the "please sir, may i have some more?" pose

FYI - this is the "Karate Chop" pose

This is the picture that made me think, wow, a cowboy  hat and change of shirt, and we're set for the rodeo.

    1. Thanks! I was so proud of the fasteners, lol. On short notice, without ordering supplies, you really have to use your brain for something different. I was telling my husband last night that I would really hate to judge these open auditions - I mean, what criteria can you even use? Difficulty? Originality? Cuteness? I can't even imagine. And I still love your coat - did you break any needles doing it?

    1. I didn't even realize that's what it looked like until I finished and a friend pointed it out. Duh. Thanks for coming over! ( and try not to get Newsies songs stuck in your head like I did)

  4. Too cute! I'll have to check out that pants pattern. I'm endlessly making things for my daughter and have created very little for the boy child! Love all the great poses - I'm lucky to get mine to stand still long enough for a pic!

    1. That book, Growing Up Sew Liberated, has so many great patterns in it. I've tried commercial patterns for kids pants, and I really like hers better. Plus she does a good job of describing each step thoroughly. I recommend that book highly (if you can't tell!)
And on the poses, I just took a million (okay, 200) pictures of him...he is VERY artificial in his poses, with his "cheese" face. And those 200 photos were in maybe 15 minutes, lol. There also may have been bribery involved. :)
      Thanks for commenting!
