Introducing "Fast Project Friday" Link Up, and my fast project - a tiny sewing kit!

Good morning everyone!  We're all a bit under the weather here today, waiting for the spring pollen to settle. I don't have a ton of energy to share today.  Also, Friday posts will probably almost always be a little short, because it's my last full day with the boys before the weekend, since we have no school on Fridays.

Today, I wanted to show you a quick and easy project you can do in no time flat. Well, maybe 10 minutes, but there's no sewing!

Emergency Sewing Kit

Supplies:

  • A small Altoids tin.  These things are fantastic for so many projects.  I used an Altoids Smalls box, but there's so many different varieties, any would work.

  • Sewing supplies - I used a needle threader, a pack of needles, 2 bobbins of thread (white and black), 2 different buttons, and a safety pin.  I had a strip of self adhesive Velcro in there too, but my book chest ate it and I don't think I'll be seeing it again.
I had this vintage sewing kit that was missing quite a few pieces, so I took out one of the gold sets of needles.

  • Scrap of fabric - something thin, or your box won't open.
  • A piece of wool, felt, or polyfill for a pincushion top
  • fabric adhesive
Here's what I did:
  • Make sure everything you want will fit in the kit.
  • Cut the wool piece to be smaller than the top of the Altoids tin.
  • Apply fabric glue to the top of the tin. I just squiggled some back and forth, then pressed the wool on.
  • While the wool is soaking up the glue, cut the fabric piece, enough to cover the top of the tin and wrap around the edges to the inside.
  • Take the weight off the wool, and apply another squiggle of glue.

  • Press fabric on top, and put the weight back on.
  • After a few minutes, take the weight off
  • Apply fabric glue around the inside edge walls of the tin, all up and down the sides.Wrap fabric from the front, stretch and press onto the glue.  Do this to the front and sides.

  • Close the tin, squashing in the fabric to dry. Open it again in a couple of seconds to keep it from gluing closed.
  • Once you have the front and sides done, apply a bead of glue to the back outside of the tin, and press the fabric onto it.  Let it overhang the back edge for now.
  • Go have a hot beverage of your choice while the glue dries.
  • Come back and trim the back edge the overhangs the edges with a sharp knife.  You want to trim evenly on the back.

  • Cut and glue a piece of fabric inside the lid.  This covers the edges from the outside, and makes the inside prettier.Hey, that's important too.
  • Let the glue dry for a few minutes.
  • When the glue dries, fill it up with supplies!
  • If you have any trouble opening and closing your kit, you can bend the center front in a little, or glue a small piece of bias tape inside to hang out as a pull strap.
Here's mine (the glue isn't dried yet):

That's my fast project - what's yours?  Link it up!
