Easy St Patrick's Day Wreath

This idea has sat in my head for a few weeks, and it came out differently than I envisioned it, but I'm thrilled to see how it turned out!  Off to the craft store on payday for the finishing touch - a cutesy sign to go on the bottom half!

Want to make one too?  Here's it is:

What you need:

  • A wreath form- I found my straw one at the craft store and left the plastic on.
  • Buy a skein of green yarn.  I used a little less than one skein of Caron Simply Soft in a dark green
  • Some rainbow ribbon - mine is sheer, from Joann. I got 2 yards and used most of it.
  • Black felt (cauldron)
  • White fabric or felt (cloud)
  • small amount of gold fabric, yarn, or felt
  • Hot glue gun and sticks

If you wanted a grassier look, you could use a green eyelash yarn to wrap the wreath - but I'm fundamentally against purchasing eyelash yarn just because I've had so many tangled up balls to deal with now.  I bet it would look cute though!  I've seen this one floating around that uses that yarn.

How to:

  • Wrap the wreath with yarn - This part actually takes the longest, since you have to wind it around about 8 million times, and fairly evenly.  Frankly I found it quite tedious...but find a good show to watch, you'll be done in no time. Did you know Season 1 of Downton Abbey is on Amazon Prime Instant Video?
  • I made a ruffly rainbow that went about halfway around the wreath, and glued it down with hot glue.  You could pleat it for a different look, or even sew a strip of basting stitches down the middle and ruffle it evenly.  Don't know how?  Dana at Made has a great tutorial on gathering.
  • I freehanded and cut out a black cauldron from felt and hot glued it to the base of one side of the rainbow, and made some curly gold "coins" from yarn to hot glue by the rim.

  • I cut a cloud from some white fabric scraps I had lying around, and glued on the other end of the rainbow.  I used the rest of the ribbon to make a hanging loop for the wreath.

TADA! Done.

I know it's a little early for St Patrick's Day projects, but I was excited to show this one to you!
